KUALA LUMPUR, 28 August 2019 – As part of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for Prasarana, Group Communications and Strategic Marketing Division has instigated series of talks which will focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The talks will be delivered by the prominent and well-respected speakers that are selected based on their fields of expertise.

STEM has successfully completed its first round today at Kompleks Rapid Bus Cheras Selatan with the first theme; Science. The talk was delivered by Professor Dr. Cheong Sok Ching, the Senior Group Leader of Head and Neck Cancer Research Malaysia.

Speaking at the event today, the Ipoh-born scientist explained that the Cancer Research Malaysia is committed to find the cure for head and neck cancer as it is classified as the most common cancer in Asians, including Malaysians. She added that the nasal and paranasal cancers are the third most common in men and forty times more common amongst Asians. The discovery of the cure to these cancers is aimed to increase the number of survivals since it could be prevented with an early detection.

“One of the challenges to deal with this is that patients do not come in time when the cancer is at stage one or two. This is due to many factors, and one of it is geographical factor. For example, people in Limbang, Sarawak have to travel all the way to Miri to get the treatment. The long, challenging journey has resulted to the declination of patients to follow-up with the doctor”, said Professor Dr. Cheong Sok Ching earlier today. In addressing the problem, Cancer Research Malaysia has introduced an application called ‘MeMOSA’ to ease the process in identifying the seriousness level and to set an appointment with the doctor.

Professor Dr. Cheong Sok Ching has described her journey towards the discovery as not as easy as we thought, especially in raising the fund. However, she believes that “the fear of failure is worst than not trying to do anything at all”. The event ended with the presentation of token of appreciation from Dato’ Mohamed Hazlan Mohamed Hussain to Professor Dr. Cheong Sok Ching.

Do anticipate for the next talk with the theme of Technology that will feature another notable speaker in the near future.
