Prasarana Orders Comprehensive Investigation by MRCBGK

Kuala Lumpur
KLANG, 21 July – Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) – project owner for the LRT Line 3 (LRT3) project, has instructed its main contractor to immediately conduct a comprehensive investigation on what caused the sinkhole on Jalan Langat and Jalan Johan Setia stretch here during a boring piling for the LRT3 project yesterday.

“The investigation will take one week. MRCB George Kent, the main contractor for the LRT3 project, has given us their commitment that they will take all the necessary mitigation measures in order not to jeopardise the completion the project, which is scheduled by February 2024. As project owners of the LRT3 project, we would like to apologise to the public for any inconvenience caused,” Prasarana said in a statement here today.

Prasarana Chairman Dato’ Sri Haji Tajuddin Abdul Rahman today visited the site where he was briefed by MRCBGK on the mitigation works. He was accompanied by Prasarana’s President and Group Chief Executive Officer, Encik Muhammad Nizam Alias and its Deputy Chief for Projects, Encik Mohd Lokman Hamid.

The sink hole had affected a surrounding area of approximately 30m radius; in which the adjacent road pavements, such as Jalan Langat and Jalan Johan Setia settled about one to two meters into the ground. The settlement has also further damaged the existing pipes and flooded the sinkhole area.

“Immediately after the incident, the three pipes were shut down. Syabas has decided to divert the pipes. They expect to complete this by tomorrow. Other services, such as the gas pipe and 11kV cable were not affected as confirmed by the relevant agencies,” the statement said.

The Work Package Contractor (WPC), SN Akmida Sdn Bhd has mobilised mobile cranes to dismantle the tilted bored piling rig boom. The dismantling works of the boring top mast were completed at 3.30am this morning (21 July 2020); effectively minimising the risk of toppling.

As for the removal of the piling rig base machine, works on extracting the equipment extracted from the sinking area will be completed tomorrow.

“Once the bored piling machine has been removed from the sinking area, the whole area will be backfilled, while rectification works for the damaged pavement will commence. The pavement rectification works are expected to be completed by next Tuesday, 28 July 2020, subject to further monitoring and observation to ensure the settlement is stabilized,” the statement added.

“There will be road closures and traffic diversions on Jalan Langat and Jalan Johan Setia to facilitate sinkhole repair works from today to August 3, with the approval from the Klang Municipal Council and the Public Works Department (JKR).

“MRCBGK is coordinating the traffic diversions with the Klang Traffic Police. They will keep the public updated from time to time,” the statement added.
